While the ICE Syros has largely underperformed, the EV version could fare better amid growing demand for electric cars
Kia recently launched the Syros EV in the price range of Rs 13.49 lakh to Rs 19.99 lakh. This is Kia’s second electric offering in the mass market segment after Carens Clavis EV. Syros EV will primarily challenge Nexon EV in the sub-4-meter electric SUV segment. Let’s compare the features and specs of the top variants of Kia Syros EV vs. Tata Nexon EV to better understand the options available. Syros EV top variant is the X-Line variant, whereas Nexon EV’s top version is the Empowered+ A 45.
Dimensions, Features & Equipment
Both Syros EV and Nexon EV are 3,995 mm long. Width is also largely the same, with a difference of just 3 mm. However, Syros EV is taller by 45 mm and also has a 52 mm longer wheelbase. Syros EV also has a larger frunk and 40 litres more boot space. Another difference is in the wheel size, with Syros EV getting larger 17-inch units, as compared to 16-inch units of Nexon EV. In terms of space, Syros EV seems better equipped.
Both electric SUVs are equally matched in terms of their exterior features. However, some differences are noticeable. For example, Syros EV has puddle lamps with logo projection and flush door handles. These are not available with Nexon EV. However, Nexon EV offers a wider range of colour options in comparison to Syros EV. Both SUVs have all-LED lighting, powered and foldable ORVMs and rear spoiler. Both electric SUVs offer a comprehensive range of premium features. The 12.3-inch infotainment displays are an exact match in their size.
Syros EV’s 12.3-inch digital driver display is bigger than Nexon EV’s 10.25-inch unit. Syros EV has a 5-inch HVAC display, which is not available with Nexon EV. Similarly, Syros EV has 4-way powered driver’s seat adjustment, rear seat base ventilation, and sliding and reclining rear seats. Areas where Nexon EV excels include a 9-speaker JBL system and an air purifier. Other features such as panoramic sunroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, wireless charger, OTA updates, ambient lighting and rear AC vents are available with both SUVs.
Performance, Range, Charging
Syros EV has a 51.4 kWh battery pack, which is the largest in segment. In comparison, Nexon EV utilizes a 45 kWh battery pack. Syros EV also has better performance figures at 171 hp and 255 Nm. In comparison, Nexon EV generates 144 hp and 215 Nm. Syros EV is also ahead in range with 526 km. Nexon EV offers 489 km. Syros EV has faster acceleration with 0 to 100 km/h achievable in 8.1 seconds. Nexon EV takes 8.9 seconds to do the same job. Both SUVs have a single motor and FWD layout.
Charging time using a DC fast charger is almost the same for both SUVs. However, Syros EV supports up to 100 kW DC fast charging, as compared to 60 kW of Nexon EV. AC charging time is 8.9 hours (11 kW charger) for Syros EV and 6 hours 36 minutes (7.2 kW charger) for Nexon EV. Both SUVs have three drive modes – Eco, Normal and Sport for Syros EV and Eco, City and Sport for Nexon EV. Other features available with both SUVs include V2L, multi-level regen braking, paddle shifters for regen and cruise control. Only Syros EV has i-pedal mode.
Safety, Pricing
Both SUVs appear equally matched in terms of safety. Nexon EV has received 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. Syros EV is yet to be tested, but is expected to get a 5-star rating like its ICE version. There are a few differences in the safety kit such as Syros EV getting follow me home headlamps. Syros EV also has side parking sensors in addition to the ones at the front and rear. Nexon EV has similar additional features such as hill descent control and rain sensing wipers.
These are not available with Syros EV. Both SUVs have Level 2 ADAS and other safety features such as 6 airbags, electronic stability program, hill hold control, TPMS and a 360 degree camera. Syros EV is ahead in areas like dimensions, performance and range. In terms of safety and interior equipment, both SUVs are equally matched in most parts. However, Nexon EV has a significant advantage in terms of its pricing. Nexon EV top variant ‘Empowered+ A 45’ is available at a starting price of Rs 17.49 lakh. In comparison, Syros EV top variant ‘X-Line’ is available at Rs 20 lakh.
