Hyundai has unveiled Neira Prototype at GIIAS 2026 in Indonesia. Officially described by Hyundai as a seven-seater electric SUV, Neira has been developed with Indonesian families in focus and is planned for local production. Interestingly, its overall proportions and design have a strong resemblance to Kia Carens Clavis EV which is on sale in India.

From the side, Neira’s overall silhouette, long roofline, window area and three-row proportions look quite similar to Kia Carens Clavis. This raises the possibility that Neira could share its platform, electric powertrain and several other components with Carens EV.

Such a strategy wouldn’t be unusual. Hyundai and Kia already share platforms, powertrains and technologies across multiple products. In India, Creta and Seltos are prominent examples, where common underpinnings are combined with different exterior and interior designs. Hyundai hasn’t confirmed any technical connection between Neira and Carens EV, so this remains a possibility based on their similarities.

Distinct Hyundai styling

Despite the familiar proportions, Neira gets a distinctly Hyundai face. It has a wide LED light signature at the front, vertically positioned lighting elements and a largely closed-off fascia appropriate for an EV. A chunky silver section around the lower bumper adds some visual ruggedness.

Other highlights include dual-tone alloy wheels, black wheel-arch cladding, roof rails, conventional door handles and silver lower-body elements. At the rear, vertically positioned LED tail lamps are connected by a slim horizontal lighting element – similar to the Carens Clavis. The chunky rear bumper gets silver and black detailing. These elements give Neira a more SUV-inspired appearance, even though its overall proportions are quite MPV-like.

Seven seats, local production confirmed

Hyundai Motors Indonesia President Director Kenny Lee has described Neira as a seven-passenger electric SUV combining a spacious cabin with Hyundai’s latest EV technology. More importantly, Hyundai plans to manufacture the production model locally at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI). The company says Neira will continue to be refined before its eventual market launch, as the vehicle displayed at GIIAS is still a prototype.

Technical specifications haven’t been announced yet. Battery capacity, range, motor output and charging capabilities remain under wraps. If Neira does share its underpinnings with Carens Clavis EV, some of these components could potentially be common between the two models. For now, Hyundai Neira appears to be another example of Hyundai-Kia’s platform-sharing strategy, but packaged and styled specifically for Hyundai and the Indonesian market.
