While base variants of some Hyundai models don’t get the small driver display at all, other models require an additional payment of US$255 (Rs 24,000) for this feature
Hyundai’s newer models pack in a comprehensive range of advanced features, one of which is the Pleos Connect system. This was first introduced with the Grandeur in Korea. And later with other new Hyundai models such as Ioniq 3, Elantra and Tucson.
Pleos Connect aims for a more seamless user experience. It works by integrating various functions of the infotainment and instrument cluster into a single screen. However, latest reports reveal that Hyundai has axed some key components of Pleos on select variants or made it a paid feature on specific models in Korea.
Pleos driver display axed on base variants
Hyundai Pleos Connect system comprises a large central screen and a slim 9.9-inch driver display. The latter is positioned directly in front of the driver. While the smaller digital screen may seem a secondary piece of equipment, it displays important information such as available range, speed, speed limit signs and efficiency numbers.
While being convenient, the slim digital display is also relevant from a safety perspective. With this display, the driver does not have to take their eyes off the road when accessing vital information. However, for the new 2027 Elantra and global-spec Ioniq 3, this slim display is no longer available with the base variants.
Buyers in Korea can get the slim digital display with the Elantra by paying an additional amount of US$255 (Rs 24,000). However, there is no such option with the base Ioniq 3 models. Ioniq 3 also misses out on a head-up display. This means that users will have to rely on the central touchscreen to view all the important information.
Even in the UK, the Ioniq 3 Advanced base model does not get the slim digital display. However, the higher trims do get this feature as standard. Pleos was originally designed as a complete package. It comes as a surprise when key components are no longer standard or positioned as a paid upgrade. Mostly applicable on the base variants, this move is likely aimed at reducing costs.
Pleos Connect for India
Hyundai will be introducing Pleos Connect In India as well, starting in 2027. Cars like the new-gen Creta and Tucson are expected to get the Pleos Connect system. Considering the recent strategy for the Korean market, it remains to be seen what approach is taken for the Indian market.
Hyundai’s Korean strategy seems to mirror something that Tesla did with the Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla’s early models like the Model S and Model X came with a dual screen setup. However, with the Model 3 and later Model Y, Tesla completely removed the instrument display. For any information, the driver has to view the single centrally mounted touchscreen. The Pleos Connect setup is something like the middle path, but with recent moves, select base variants seem to be following the Tesla strategy entirely.
