EV ownership in India has changed significantly over the past few years. Larger batteries, longer real-world range, faster charging and improving infrastructure mean an electric car is no longer restricted to predictable city commutes. But range is only one part of the experience. Charging convenience, running costs, servicing, battery warranty and safety are equally important, and these real-world owner examples help explain how each aspect works beyond claimed figures and specifications.

Home Charging Changes The Ownership Experience

One of the biggest differences between an EV and an ICE vehicle is how it is refuelled. For an owner with dedicated home charging, the car can simply be plugged in overnight instead of making regular trips to a fuel station.

Mahindra EVs are available with up to 79 kWh battery packs and support AC home charging as well as DC fast charging. With compatible fast chargers, a 20-80% charge can be completed in around 20 minutes. This makes highway charging stops more manageable on longer journeys.

Mahindra BE 6 owner Ranjit highlights why home charging remains particularly important. After covering more than 10,000 km in his BE 6, he says access to home charging is one of the key factors he would consider before recommending an EV. With the larger battery offering around 470-500 km in his usage, charging can be needed only periodically for regular commuting.

Real-World Range – Owners Are Going Much Further

Range anxiety remains one of the first questions surrounding EVs, but owner experiences show how much things have changed. Ranjit reports around 480-510 km of city range from his BE 6 and approximately 450-460 km on highways while cruising at around 90-100 km/h. He also points out that extreme summer conditions and increased AC usage can reduce real world range, something buyers should factor into real-world expectations.

There are more extreme examples as well. Mahindra XEV 9e owner Anuj Purohit completed an approximately 3,890 km Gurgaon-Bhutan-Gurgaon road trip, using public DC charging along the way. Another owner, Kamlesh Sharma, documented a 6,000+ km Gujarat-Ladakh journey, including multiple circuits from Leh.

Umang’s XEV 9e experience in Ladakh is another interesting example. On a Leh-Hanle round trip through mountainous terrain, he reported covering around 488 km while using 72% of the battery, aided by regenerative braking on downhill sections.

These individual experiences aren’t guaranteed range figures, since driving style, speed, weather, terrain and AC usage can change efficiency substantially. But they demonstrate that today’s EVs are being used far beyond city limits.

What About EV Service Costs?

Lower routine maintenance requirements are another advantage of an electric powertrain. There is no engine oil, spark plug or conventional engine oil filter to replace, and regenerative braking can reduce usage of friction brakes.

Ranjit’s second BE 6 service offers a useful real-world reference. At around 10,700 km, his service involved an AC carbon filter replacement, grease and minor consumables, along with software updates and tyre rotation. The invoice shared by him shows a total bill of Rs 1,316.

One owner’s bill cannot define servicing costs for every vehicle, but it demonstrates how routine EV maintenance can be relatively simple. Tyres, suspension, brakes, filters, fluids and other wear components will still require maintenance over the vehicle’s lifetime.

Running Costs Depend On Where You Charge

EV running cost per km can vary substantially depending on the charging. Home electricity is generally considerably cheaper than commercial DC fast charging, making owners with home charging the biggest beneficiaries.

Public fast charging costs more, but its primary advantage is speed and convenience during highway journeys. An EV owner who does most charging at home and uses DC chargers mainly on occasional road trips can therefore keep overall energy costs relatively low.

The ownership model becomes somewhat similar to a smartphone — charge at home during downtime and use fast charging when additional energy is needed quickly.

Battery Warranty And Safety

Long-term battery life and replacement cost remain important considerations for buyers. Mahindra offers a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty for the first registered private owner of BE 6 and XEV 9e, subject to warranty conditions. Following an ownership transfer, battery coverage is applicable for 10 years or 2 lakh km from the original delivery date, whichever comes earlier.

Mahindra EV Ownership In 2026

EV ownership in 2026 is increasingly moving beyond the limitations that buyers once associated with electric cars. Mahindra BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S combine large battery packs, long driving range, fast-charging capability, strong safety credentials and relatively low routine maintenance requirements to make that transition easier.

More importantly, these advantages are now being demonstrated by actual owners. From Ranjit’s 10,000+ km of BE 6 usage and low routine service cost to Anuj Purohit’s nearly 3,900 km Gurgaon-Bhutan-Gurgaon journey and Mahindra EV owners taking their vehicles across Ladakh, these SUVs are being used well beyond regular urban commutes.

There is another aspect of ownership that is becoming increasingly relevant – Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs). Mahindra’s Electric Origin SUVs have been designed around an SDV architecture, allowing the company to improve and expand vehicle capabilities through software updates. This means ownership does not necessarily remain limited to the software features available on the day the vehicle was purchased.

We have already seen this approach with Mahindra announcing new software capabilities with BE 6 Sporteq, with compatible features planned to reach existing BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S owners through updates, subject to hardware compatibility. For an existing owner, that creates the possibility of the vehicle gaining new functionality even months after purchase.

Home charging remains one of the biggest enablers of convenient EV ownership, while expanding public fast-charging infrastructure is making longer journeys increasingly practical. Combine that with Mahindra’s battery warranty, 5-star Bharat NCAP ratings and an SDV architecture capable of evolving over time, and BE 6 and XEV 9e address several of the questions buyers traditionally have about moving to an EV.
