Latest one million vehicles produced in just 27 months, highlighting rapid growth at Mahindra’s flagship manufacturing facility
Mahindra & Mahindra has achieved a major manufacturing milestone, with its Chakan plant in Maharashtra rolling out its three-millionth vehicle. The milestone vehicle is the Mahindra BE 6, the company’s flagship born-electric SUV, reflecting the plant’s growing role in supporting both ICE and EV production.
The Chakan facility commenced operations in December 2009. Since then, it has become one of Mahindra’s key production hubs. Notably, the latest one million vehicles were produced in just 27 months, compared to 107 months taken to achieve the first million, highlighting the rapid increase in production volumes driven by strong demand for Mahindra’s SUV lineup.
Flexible Manufacturing Hub
Spread across 657 acres, the Chakan plant currently manufactures 19 models and more than 450 variants, covering passenger vehicles, electric SUVs and commercial vehicles. The facility supports flexible multi-model production through seven assembly lines, allowing Mahindra to build multiple products on the same production infrastructure.
The plant has also adopted advanced manufacturing technologies including Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity and digital traceability systems. Around 1,500 robots are deployed across the facility, with over 98% automation in the body shop. Mahindra also uses robotic painting, automated sealer application, 3D component scanning and real-time weld quality monitoring to improve production quality and consistency.
Focus On Sustainability
Mahindra highlighted that sustainability remains a core focus at the Chakan facility. More than 50% of the plant’s energy requirement is met through renewable energy sources, while the EV manufacturing operations run entirely on 100% renewable energy.
The plant is also water positive, returning 131% of the water it consumes back to nature through rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge initiatives. Chakan has also achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification. In addition to catering to domestic demand, vehicles produced at Chakan are exported to several international markets including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Commenting on the milestone, R Velusamy, President – Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said that reducing the time taken to build each successive million vehicles reflects growing customer demand as well as improvements in manufacturing efficiency. He added that the Chakan plant will continue to play a central role in Mahindra’s strategy of building world-class products in India for both domestic and global markets.
