Mahindra recently unveiled Scorpio Lifestyler pickup, with plans for launch in April 2027. Depending on the market, Lifestyler is expected to be offered with the 2.2-litre turbo diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines. While electrified powertrains have been considered, Mahindra is currently not committing to either a hybrid or pure-electric version of Lifestyler.
Scorpio Lifestyler Hybrid Not Confirmed Yet
Speaking to Carsales Australia, Mahindra’s Head of International Operations Sachin Arolkar indicated that a pure-electric powertrain isn’t being considered for the pickup segment. When asked about the possibility of a hybrid Lifestyler, Arolkar responded, “Just hold your horses for some time.”
This suggests Mahindra is keeping its options open rather than confirming a hybrid version at this stage. In markets such as Australia, Lifestyler could initially be positioned primarily with a diesel powertrain.
Electrified pickups are gaining traction in Australia, with models such as BYD Shark 6 PHEV and Ford Ranger PHEV entering the market. However, diesel continues to account for a large part of the ute segment, especially among buyers prioritizing towing, long-distance travel and heavy-duty applications.
Mahindra therefore appears to be taking a wait-and-watch approach with Lifestyler electrification. But the situation is quite different when we look at the company’s SUV strategy in India.
Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid In The Works
Mahindra is working on multiple electrified powertrain solutions for its Indian SUV portfolio. One of the key upcoming developments is a full-hybrid powertrain for XUV 7XO.
This will mark an important expansion of Mahindra’s powertrain portfolio. The company currently has a strong presence with petrol and diesel SUVs, while its born-electric range is being expanded through models under the BE and XEV families. A strong hybrid will allow Mahindra to occupy the space between conventional ICE vehicles and pure EVs.
Hybrid SUVs have also started becoming increasingly relevant in India. Toyota and Maruti currently have a sizeable presence in this space, while newer products such as Kia Sorento Hybrid and MG Hector Tomahawh PHEV are increasing competition at the premium end of the market.
XEV 9e Range Extender (EREV) Planned
Another interesting development is a range-extender powertrain being worked on for XEV 9e. Unlike a conventional hybrid where the combustion engine can directly drive the wheels, a range-extender setup primarily uses an internal combustion engine to generate electricity and extend the vehicle’s usable driving range.
Such a setup could address one of the key concerns associated with pure EV ownership – dependence on charging infrastructure during long-distance journeys. XEV 9e can therefore potentially be offered to a wider set of buyers without giving up its primarily electric driving experience.
New Hybrid, PHEV Rivals Arrive In India
Mahindra’s hybrid strategy is becoming increasingly relevant as new electrified SUVs enter the Indian market. Kia Sorento Hybrid is one of the latest additions, combining a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor.
MG Hector Tomahawk has also entered the market with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, providing another alternative to conventional petrol and diesel SUVs. These products demonstrate how manufacturers are increasingly exploring the middle ground between ICE vehicles and pure EVs.
For Mahindra, XUV 7XO Hybrid could provide a direct response to this growing category, while XEV 9e range extender could offer an alternative approach to buyers who like the benefits of an EV but remain concerned about charging availability on longer journeys.
Mahindra Preparing Multiple Powertrain Options
Mahindra’s strategy therefore appears broader than simply choosing between ICE and EVs. Petrol and diesel will continue to serve conventional SUV buyers, while BE and XEV models cater to pure-EV customers. Strong hybrids and range extenders could eventually fill the space between the two.
For now, these electrification plans are focused on Mahindra’s SUV portfolio rather than Scorpio Lifestyler. But as hybrid technology becomes more important in India and overseas markets, it remains to be seen whether Mahindra will eventually extend these powertrain options to its ladder-frame models as well.
