Nissan’s latest e-POWER hybrid technology has set a new Guinness World Records title after covering 1,980 km without external charging or refuelling

Automakers around the world are constantly pushing the limits of efficiency, and Nissan has now added another milestone to its growing list of achievements with its unique e-POWER hybrid technology. Equipped with the latest-generation e-POWER system, Nissan Qashqai Hybrid has entered the Guinness World Records by completing 1,980 km on a single tank of fuel without any external charging or refuelling.

The achievement was recorded in real-world driving conditions rather than a controlled laboratory test. While Nissan has not officially quoted the fuel economy achieved during the run, based on the Qashqai’s 55-litre fuel tank, the record works out to an impressive around 36 km/l.

Bogota To The Caribbean Coast On A Single Tank

The record-setting journey took place in Colombia between 14th and 17th July 2026, covering a route from Bogota to the Caribbean coast. It has now been recognised as the longest journey completed by a non-plug-in extended-range electric SUV without external charging or refuelling.

The route itself presented a mix of highways, city traffic and varying road conditions. Since the drive started in Bogota, located at an altitude of around 2,600 metres above sea level, and ended near the Caribbean coast, the gradual descent also allowed the vehicle to recover additional energy through regenerative braking. Combined with smooth driving inputs and efficient speed management by professional drivers, the conditions helped maximise the potential of the e-POWER system.

How e-POWER Is Different From A Conventional Hybrid

One of the biggest differentiators of Nissan’s e-POWER system is the way it delivers power. Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles, where both the petrol engine and electric motor can directly drive the wheels, the wheels in an e-POWER vehicle are driven exclusively by an electric motor.

The petrol engine never powers the wheels mechanically. Instead, it functions solely as a generator, producing electricity whenever required to recharge the battery and supply power to the electric motor. This allows the vehicle to deliver the smoothness, instant response and refinement associated with an electric vehicle, while retaining the convenience of conventional petrol refuelling and eliminating the need for external charging.

The latest-generation e-POWER system features Nissan’s compact 5-in-1 modular powertrain, integrating the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser into a single package. Regenerative braking further improves overall efficiency by recovering energy that would otherwise be lost during deceleration.

Third Long-Distance Efficiency Demonstration

This is not the first time Nissan has showcased the capabilities of its e-POWER technology. The company has previously conducted successful long-distance efficiency drives in the United Kingdom and Tasmania, demonstrating the system’s ability to deliver long range and EV-like performance across diverse terrains and climates. The Colombia drive, however, is the first to earn a Guinness World Records title, adding another milestone to Nissan’s global electrification journey.

Commenting on the achievement, Richard Candler, Nissan Corporate Executive (Family, Product & Components Strategy), said the latest-generation e-POWER technology has been developed around real customer needs, delivering efficiency, refinement and an EV-like driving experience while helping more customers transition towards electrified mobility.

While Nissan currently does not offer e-POWER technology in India, the company has confirmed multiple new products for the domestic market over the next few years. If introduced in India in the future, e-POWER could offer an attractive alternative for buyers seeking the driving experience of an EV without having to depend on charging infrastructure.
