After experiencing mild hybrid vehicles for a long time, Indian automotive market finally got a step up with strong hybrid vehicles in the mainstream segment. Leading the frontline are just three brands – Toyota, Honda and Maruti Suzuki. Renault has announced their foray into the strong hybrid world with Duster Hybrid featuring a larger battery pack.
As of writing this post, Indian mainstream automotive market has quite a few strong hybrid vehicles to choose from. The most notable among them are Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Honda City and Toyota Innova Hycross and its Maruti counterpart, the Invicto, among others.
Strong Hybrid Car Sales H1 2026
The best-selling strong hybrid vehicle in the country continues to be the Toyota Innova Hycross which sold a total of 27,812 units in H1 2026, holding a 48% market share within this list. On a YoY basis, sales have gone down by around 6%, when compared to the corresponding sales from the same period last year.
In 2nd place, we again have Toyota with their Urban Cruiser Hyryder, or simply called Hyryder. It is a strong hybrid SUV and it registered 18,577 units in H1 of 2026, accounting for roughly 32% of market share in this list. Hyryder sales grew by 23% YoY, which is a healthy figure considering the volumes.
Maruti Suzuki took 3rd and 4th place in strong hybrid sales with Grand Vitara and Victoris SUVs. Grand Vitara strong hybrid sales was 4,086 units accounting for 7% market share of this list, while it was 6% with Victoris which sold 3,231 units. Grand Vitara strong hybrid sales more than halved YoY as there was a 54% decline in sales.
5th place was also taken by Maruti Suzuki, but with the Invicto, which is a rebadged version of Innova Hycross. Invicto strong hybrid sold 1,418 units and sales dropped by 26% YoY. In 6th and 7th place, we see Toyota again with Camry (1,188 units) and Vellfire (914 units). While Camry saw a 1% sales decline YoY, Vellfire saw sales blow up as there was a 60% growth in sales YoY.
Honda City e:HEV Sold 659 Units
Being a mainstream strong hybrid vehicle, one would think Honda City e:HEV would be higher up the sales chart. At least above the executive Camry and the luxury Vellfire offerings. However, that is not the case as City e:HEV saw 659 takers in H1 of 2026, which was less than luxury offerings.
That said, sales are growing as Honda City e:HEV registered a 22% YoY growth over the same period last year. While Renault has already commenced bookings of Duster Hybrid, while more OEMs are working on launching strong hybrid offerings to bridge the gap between ICE and EVs.
